IL ABC BOOKS

The IL ABC books are completed! Every student worked so hard researching different aspects of IL. The students wrote a unique page for each letter of the alphabet. We will celebrate our successes next Friday.

DEAR stories

Our DEAR stories are looking fantastic. Inspired by Dear Mr. Blueberry and Regarding the Fountain, the students’ DEAR stories are exchanges between two characters. All stories involve some sort of confusion/misunderstanding. I am so impressed by the students’ creativity!

Kellogg Visit

After reading many of his books, it was wonderful to hear Steven Kellogg speak in person. He engaged the audience with his stories about his dog, Pinkerton.

Today, the students wrote heart-felt “Thank-you” letters to him.

Electricity Fair

Friday was the most wonderful day! Students showed off their creative minds and scientific talents during the annual 4th grade Electricity Fair. Second and third grade classrooms, as well as parents, visited the fair and interacted with all of the different projects. I am so impressed by everyone’s creativity; there was such a wide range of projects this year (and no game boards). Ideas ranged from a hot dog cooker to a bean bag toss to a burglar alarm. Great work!

Go Green

Heller Nature Center visited today. Students tie-dyed small cloths to use as napkins, in an attempt to save as much paper as possible.

Challenge yourself to go an entire week without using a napkin or paper towel!

Happy to be Back

It’s great to see everyone again! We had an enjoyable day, back at school. One of the highlights from today was storytelling in the IMC. We are working on the art of telling stories, with master story-teller, Ms. S. Today, the students practiced sharing personal stories about memorable events.

Reminder: Electricity projects due tomorrow.

Have a great break!

We had a great day today, transitioning into a break. Students heard a story in the IMC, worked on DEAR stories, participated in the Diversity Awareness program, and enjoyed PE with T.

One of the students’ favorite parts of the day was drawing a blueprint of our classroom, from a different location (the hallway). The students were amazed by what a man with autism was able to accomplish when he started drawing blueprints.

Check out his accomplishments at:

Also, make sure to ask your child (if they have math with Ms. O) to multiply any number by 11. Challenge them to multiply a 7 digit number by 11 in less than a minute.

Night of the Twisters

An action packed book filled with endless suspense, the Night of the Twisters is among one of the students’ favorite books we have read all year.  Students were eager to share their predictions and thoughts as we read.  Now, we will work on expository papers outlining precautions people can take if a tornado strikes nearby.

Vocabulary Act Out

Students look forward to “acting out” the vocabulary words each week.  Acting out the words is an interactive way to help the students better understand the meanings.  The words this week are burst, opportunities, huddle, comforted, recognizes, and journey.  My favorite scene was for the word “huddle.”
